COLOMBO (News 1st): The cyclonic storm “YAAS” located in East-central Bay of Bengal is expected to be intensified into a severe cyclonic storm during the next few hours, the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at the Department of Meteorology said on Monday (May 24).

“Under the influence of this system, winds over the island and rainy condition in South-Western part, (that is the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces) is expected to enhance from Tuesday (May 25) to Thursday (May 27),” the Advisory for Heavy Rain and Strong Winds noted.

Accordingly, the rain forecast for the next 03 days is as follows:

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Director General of Health Services confirmed 05 deaths that occurred on Sunday (23 May) due to Covid-19 virus infection. Apart from that, 27 Covid – 19 deaths that occurred between 23rd April to 22nd May were also confirmed.

One death each was reported on the 23rd April, on 17th May and on 18th May. 04 deaths were reported on 19th May and 10 deaths on 20th May. Five deaths each were reported on 21st May, and on 22nd May. Accordingly, the total number of deaths due to Covid-19 infection in Sri Lanka is 1210 .

COLOMBO (News 1st); 09 Grama Niladhari Divisions in the Jaffna, Batticaloa and Moneragala districts were placed in isolation with immediate effect, said Army Commander General Shavendra Silva on Friday (21).

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka recorded a total of 2,456 COVID-19 cases on Monday (17) said the Department of Government Information.

2,433 of these cases were from the New Year Cluster while 23 cases were those who returned from overseas.

Accordingly, the number COVID infected patients being treat at hospitals stands at 24,592.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Sri Lanka increased to 145, 202.
