The trial of Johnny Depp’s defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard has entered its fourth week in Fairfax, Virginia.
Heard is being sued by Depp for $50m (£38.2m) for implying he abused her in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed. Although she did not name him, he claims her allegations made it difficult for him to land movie roles.
In testimony on Monday, the jury heard from Depp’s security guard Travis McGivern who was present for two fights between the couple at their Los Angeles penthouse, including one in which he claims Heard punched, Depp.
The actor’s agent, Jack Whigham, told the court about Depp’s career leading up to and following the publication of the op-ed, describing it as “catastrophic”. He said Depp had lost his role in the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and he was unable to sign any studio productions in the years that followed.
Further testimony was given by a nurse employed by Heard who said she was prone to outbursts of rage and described apparent injuries after the couple had allegedly fought.
Heard is yet to testify and provide her own account of the relationship, but is expected to take the stand on either Tuesday or Wednesday.
Look up in the sky at the right moment this weekend and you could see two of the solar system’s brightest planets almost touching.
Venus and Jupiter will be millions of miles apart, but from Earth they will appear close to colliding.
This planetary conjunction happens annually but this year they will appear much closer than usual.
The same spectacle won’t occur again like this until 2039.
Just the naked eye or binoculars should be enough to see it in a clear sky.
After Saturday, the two planets will go their separate ways as they drift apart in the coming days.
“It’s very exciting for astronomers and it’s a really great opportunity for people to get out and have a look,” explains space scientist and chief stargazer at the Society for Popular Astronomy Prof Lucie Green.
A conjunction is when two planets appear close together or even touching in the Earth’s night sky.
In the days running up to Saturday, Venus and Jupiter have been gradually coming together in the sky.
The actual orbit of the planets are about 430 million miles apart but their apparent alignment seen from Earth gives the illusion that they are touching.
The peak time to see it was Saturday at around 05:00 BST. But it will still be visible on Sunday and in the coming days as the planets slowly move apart.
Pre-dawn is best, looking east before the Sun rises.
The planets will be low down in the sky, close to the horizon, and hills and buildings will block the view. If you can, find a high spot and look for two dazzlingly bright spots very close together.
“The planets will differ in their brightness. Venus is brighter than Jupiter so it will look dazzlingly bright when you see it. Jupiter will be slightly fainter, about one-sixth of the brightness of Venus,” explains Prof Green.
She suggests using an app to help navigate your way around the skies.
And if you have telescope, you might be able to make out some structure in the atmosphere of Jupiter or some of its largest moons.
The conjunction can be seen from both of Earth’s hemispheres at different times of day and night.
Those observing with a telescope may also be treated to a view of Mars and Saturn forming a line of four planets.
Prof Green says she plans to be up and out of bed to watch it from the UK.
“But if I do miss it on Saturday morning, I’m not going to be too worried,” she explains.
“In the coming days the two planets start to get further and further apart – So I will still be able to see them.”
Rose Rock speaks out about the infamous slap at the 94th Academy Awards for the first time, adding that her son is ‘still processing’ the altercation.
Chris Rock‘s mother addressed Will Smith‘s controversial slap that occurred on stage at the 94th Academy Awards last month.
Rose Rock, a motivational speaker, author, and youth and family advocate, told local South Carolina news station WIS-TV her son is “still processing” the incident and shared her thoughts on the slap, lamenting that a 10-year Oscars ban is hardly a punishment.
“When Will slapped Chris, he slapped all of us,” the Rock matriarch said. “But he really slapped me. When you hurt my child, you hurt me.” When asked what she would say to Smith about the altercation, Rose said, “I have no idea what I would say other than, ‘What in the world were you thinking?'”
She continued, “Because you did a slap, but so many things could have happened. Chris could have stepped back and fallen. You really could have gotten taken out in handcuffs. You didn’t think. You reacted to your wife giving you the side-eye, and you went up, and you made her day because she was bowled over laughing when it happened.”
Rose said she thought the incident was scripted until Smith “started with the obscenities,” noting of the ban, “What does that mean? You don’t even go every year.” She doesn’t believe Smith should have his Oscar revoked, but noted her son deserves a more genuine apology, referencing Smith’s public Instagram mea culpa: “His people wrote up a piece and said, ‘I apologize to Chris Rock,’ but something like that is personal,” she said. “You reach out.”
Smith slapped Rock after he joked about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her shaved head, comparing her to Demi Moore‘s character in G.I. Jane. (Pinkett Smith has alopecia, a condition that results in hair loss.) The Academy launched an investigation into the altercation soon after, with Smith ultimately resigning as a member on his own volition. The Academy board then ruled to ban Smith from Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including the Oscars, for a decade.
“The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage,” Academy president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson said in a statement obtained by EW. “During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this, we are sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented.”
Smith said of the ruling in a statement to EW, “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”
It would be hard to pin down the role that made Keanu Reeves as beloved by audiences as he is today. The Matrix was a pretty big moment. John Wick won a lot of fans over. There may be a case to be made for that BuzzFeed video he did with all the puppies. Whatever it was that won over the hearts of global audiences, he’s one of the A-list actors every franchise could use on their side. Now, we’re hearing he’s signed on for an important new part. A trusted and proven inside source for Giant Freakin Robot shares that Keanu Reeves has been cast in a secret role for Marvel.
So far, our source was able to confirm that the new project is a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as opposed to a series on Disney+. We should be seeing Keanu Reeves in an upcoming Marvel movie, and unless their plans go amiss, it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing any announcements for his part before it’s actually happening. This is one of the big Marvel secret castings.
Our source shares that this casting is similar to how Marvel cast Harry Styles, in that the studio put off telling audiences what to expect from his character for a long time. Eventually, they introduced him in the credits for Eternals, and we’re still waiting to see his role as Eros develop, or for the studio to announce what movies he’ll be appearing in. While Giant Freakin Robot learned months ago that Charlize Theron has a role for Marvel, we’re still waiting for news on what that part will be.With that understanding, we know to expect the unexpected for the new Keanu Reeves role at Marvel.
There are so many upcoming opportunities for Keanu Reeves to appear in a Marvel movie. Could he be in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness? That one is coming up pretty soon. Currently, filmmaker James Gunn is working on Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3, which is expected to release on May 5, 2023. James Gunn has already been hinting that a lot of unexpected appearances will happen in that movie, so it seems like a great one to surprise audiences with an unexpected appearance.
The Marvels, also premiering in 2023, has been kept under extreme lock and key so far, with very little known about it, making it an easy place to hide Keanu Reeves. Whichever Marvel movie it is, and whatever the part, it’ll be hard for them to keep this completely secret for too long, especially with a name like his in the mix. It’ll be interesting to see how much more is revealed before we finally see him on screen.
The first three months of this new year has already passed us by. So far, it has been a mixed bag, as far as film releases are concerned at least. From more independent, comparatively smaller OTT releases to the big theatrical experience, we have had it all. The conversation has been dominated by The Kashmir Files which made more news for its political and emotional heft than cinematic nuance, the spectacle that is SS Rajamouli’s RRR and the polarising Gehraiyaan.
After its release date was pushed back, perhaps owing to the pandemic, Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday and Dhairya Karwa-starrer Gehraiyaan finally saw the light of the day in the second week of February. The trailer had promised an adult, complicated but tantalising relationship drama. However, the movie turned out to be something else altogether. Sure, it was about relationships and what they mean to us and how they change us. But Gehraiyaan also turned out to be a thriller of sorts, a ‘domestic noir,’ as its lead Padukone had once mentioned in a media interaction. Not everybody was up for its unpredictable twist and its open-ended conclusion. But Gehraiyaan is worth mentioning because no movie in so long has generated the kind of extreme reactions it has — people either seem to love it, or hate it.
The day Gehraiyaan hit the streamer, Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar’s Badhaai Do also released in cinemas. Although it failed to generate impressive numbers at the box office, people who saw it could not help but appreciate the way its LGBTQAI themes were handled. Rajkummar and Bhumi gave credible performances, so did the supporting cast, especially Sheeba Chaddha, as Rao’s grieving, eccentric, lost mother.
The film that opened the box office in a big way, at least in the Hindi-speaking belts was Alia Bhatt’s star turn in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi. Based on Hussain Zaidi’s book called Mafia Queens of Mumbai, Gangubai Kathiawadi’s hightened drama was softened ever so subtly by Bhatt’s leading act, who, much to people’s astonishment, not only convincingly pulled off the decidedly mature part of Gangubai, but in fact carried the entire film on her vulnerable yet strong shoulders. A special shout-out to the Neeti Mohan-sung romantic number “Meri Jaan.” Its music, the picturisation and Alia’s acting alone in it deserve a place in this list.
Gangubai Kathiawadi collected around Rs 128 crore at the box office, according to Bollywood Hungama.
The Kashmir Files
Vivek Agnihotri’s controversial movie might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is hard to ignore how strongly it has captured people’s imagination, and therefore has had spectacular results at the box office. According to the filmmaker’s last update, the movie has collected Rs 331 crore at the worldwide box office.
The day Gangubai dominated theatres, a much smaller film with a relatively unknown director called Love Hostel released on ZEE5.The film, starring Vikrant Massey, Sanya Malhotra and Bobby Deol in pivotal roles, turned out to be a surprisingly thrilling concoction of murder, mayhem and romance. While Deol definitely featured in all the headlines for playing a mean mercenary, it was Sanya and Vikrant’s chemistry and Massey’s leading act that was the movie’s highlight. Of course, director Shanker Raman’s tightly wound script aided the process greatly.
After making the endearing Tumhari Sulu in 2017, filmmaker Suresh Triveni decided to explore a darker side of humanity in his Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah-led movie Jalsa. The film is not your regular whodunnit, you pretty much are told in the first 20-30 minutes of the movie who does the deed. But what are its repercussions, especially when the gruesome hit-and-run case involves two petrified but angry mothers at the centre of it all?
Triveni explores this with firm hands, letting us know how even mothers can be fallible, irrational and imperfect creatures, like the rest of us, not unlike Maggie Gyllenhaal’s acclaimed feature The Lost Daughter.
The late Rishi Kapoor’s swan song, Sharmaji Namkeen is a bittersweet movie about a man in his golden years who is having trouble adjusting to retirement. The Hitesh Bhatia movie, in hindsight, seems like a befitting ode to Kapoor’s long career. The actor, self-admittedly a foodie, got a chance to relish that role in his final on-screen appearance. Paresh Rawal stepped in after Kapoor’s death. Despite their distinctly different takes on the same character, Sharmaji Namkeen feels like a seamless, smooth thing designed to choke you and make you smile at all the right moments.
After Gangubai Kathiawadi, the movie that finally struck gold in a big way at the box office was SS Rajamouli’s highly-anticipated period drama RRR. Starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR in the lead, along with extended cameos by the likes of Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt, RRR brought back the movie magic that was continuously punctured by whistles and exclamations of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ by cine-goers. The leads’ chemistry, spellbinding visuals and Rajamouli’s able direction made RRR the quintessential movie-watching experience which audiences have longed for ever since the pandemic began.
Director Aashiq Abu, known for acclaimed features like Virus and Halal Love Story, once again hit the nail on the head with his recently released political thriller Naaradan. Starring talents like Tovino Thomas and Anna Ben in leading roles, Naaradan sheds light on the kind of responsibility journalists have in bringing the truth forward, and how often, many of them end up becoming corrupted by the lust of fame, power and money.
Another Malayalam thriller, Pada has been brought to life by director Kamal KM. Pada boasts of a talented cast with names like Kunchacko Boban, Joju George, Vinayakan, Dileesh Pothan involved. Based on a true story that took place in 1996, Pada centres around four men who abduct Palakkad’s district collector in order to get the government to recall Adivasi Land Amendment Bill. Powered by its central performances, Pada is a reflective, well-made socio-political movie about indifference and humanity.
After causing a sensation with its (somewhat overrated) first season, “Bridgerton” returns, faced with the task of polishing a new diamond and mounting another grand romance. Deprived the company of the Duke (with Regé-Jean Page having opted to move on), the series remains frothy and watchable, if perhaps a bit less Lady Whistledown-worthy in this latest iteration.
