Meet Peeps Nicol, a remarkable 71-year-old woman who recently entered her first powerlifting competition. Despite being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2005, Peeps has defied expectations and found strength and empowerment through powerlifting.
Her journey began when she joined a local health center with a gym. Initially, she had no intention of using the gym, but a trainer named TJ reminded her of her younger brother, and she decided to give it a try. As she started using resistance machines, Peeps and TJ discussed powerlifting, and she felt drawn to the idea of becoming stronger and more independent.
At the beginning of her training, Peeps faced challenges with her stiff ankles, but with dedication and hard work, she gradually progressed. From struggling to squat without a bar, she can now deadlift an impressive 55kg. In March, she participated in a novice competition, inspired by her late husband Brian, who was a triathlete and represented Team GB in his category.
Peeps has always been adventurous in life, and being a mother to her two children was a significant adventure for her. She has never been afraid to try new things, even though she lacked traditional “womanly skills.” However, powerlifting marks the first time she has chosen something entirely for herself, making her feel empowered and confident.
Now, she aims to compete in the International Powerlifting Federation in the over-70 category. Powerlifting has changed her outlook on life and how she feels about herself. It has given her the strength to face challenges head-on and push through pain, proving to herself that she is a true powerlifter.
Peeps Nicol’s journey is a testament to the power of determination, self-discovery, and breaking societal norms. Age is no barrier when it comes to pursuing one’s passions and embracing the strength within.
