Originally a botanical garden, Villa Mandaçaia has undergone a remarkable transformation. Artist João Machado, also a botanist, created this haven to house his vast collection of plant species gathered from around the world. Nestled in the picturesque mountains of Visconde de Mauá, Brazil, the property was an ideal canvas for his vision to come alive.
Together with his wife, Arasy Benitez, a contemporary dancer, João embarked on the journey of turning their beloved land into an artistic mountain retreat. They designed every aspect of the house, keeping a single essential concept in mind: to blend seamlessly into the landscape, disappearing from view over time, veiled by lush plant coverings.
Inspired by the charm of a rustic shed, the house’s facade features a contemporary touch with “clean” materials like stones, reclaimed wood from a nearby farm, and exposed bricks. The carefully selected wood adds warmth and history to the interiors, reflecting the family’s love for textures that carry the marks of time.
Villa Mandaçaia embodies the essence of creation, and its rooms are adorned with art – paintings, ceramics, and sculptures. The living room, adjoining the kitchen, exudes the comfort of a cabin with its reclaimed wood floors, walls, and ceiling. Antique masks and ceramic candlesticks crafted by João accentuate the space without overwhelming it.
The bedroom, adorned with a canvas painted by João, features a low bed and a few select pieces of furniture, continuing the rustic minimalism theme. The bathroom echoes the design with reclaimed wood lining the walls, floor, and ceiling.
The couple’s sensibility is reflected in their decoration – prioritizing rustic minimalism, delicate, natural objects with history and character. Villa Mandaçaia stands as a testament to their creativity and love for art and nature, a space where inspiration thrives in every corner.
