The Crown is tackling one of Princess Diana’s most iconic fashion moments in season five.
New photos from the Netflix drama’s set show actor Elizabeth Debicki donning an almost exact replica of Diana’s revenge dress—the off-the-shoulder black gown the princess wore the same day her estranged husband, Prince Charles, admitted he’d had an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles on public television. It’s an outfit so famous, in fact, that it has its own Wikipedia page.
The dress, designed by Christina Stambolian, was one Diana had actually purchased three years prior to wearing it in 1994. Made of formfitting silk, the look was a daring one for a royal like Diana. However, after details leaked about Charles’s decision to air his infidelity on a broadcast program, the princess thought it was worth the risk. When she walked out of her chauffeured car to a Vanity Fair dinner at the Serpentine Gallery, photographers couldn’t stop clicking. “She wanted to look [like] a million dollars,” her former stylist, Anna Harvey, said of the revenge dress. “And she did.”
