Alexander Zverev says he hopes to inspire a new generation of German tennis players after winning the Olympic gold medal in mens singles tennis on Sunday.
The 24-year-old world No.5 from Hamburg beat beat Karen Khachanov of the Russian Olympic Committee 6-3, 6-1 for the biggest title of his career.
It follows a comeback victory for Zverev over top-ranked Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.
IOC president Thomas Bach was present in the arena to watch his compatriot win the title.
Zverev is the first German male to win tennis singles gold, follwing female legend Steffi Graf’s triumph at Seoul in 1988.
