The wait for the new 2021 Acura TLX Type S will be over soon—people will be able to drive them home by the end of May. The spicier Type S model is Acura’s version of things like the Audi S4 or BMW M340i, and the standard TLX, which is like the regular A4 or 3-series, went on sale last fall. The 355-hp TLX Type S will start at just over $50,000 when it goes on sale, bisecting the two German sports sedans in power and price
It uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that produces 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque that’s sent to all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission and Acura’s SH-AWD system. Sadly, no manual gearbox here. That puts it right between the S4’s 349 horsepower and the M340i’s 382 ponies. However, the Bimmer can be had with rear-wheel drive, but not the Audi, which comes standard with the automaker’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system.
All Type S models are equipped with Acura’s adaptive dampers (they’re available on the standard 272-hp TLX), and they get an additional Sport + drive mode. Brembo four-piston brakes are fitted up front with 20-inch multi-spoke wheels wrapped in Pirelli all-season rubber, although a lightweight set of 20-inch Y-spoke wheels (pictured above) and Pirelli P Zero summer tires are available.
Six exterior color choices are available on the TLX Type S: a Type S-exclusive Tiger Eye (pictured), Performance Red, Majestic Black, Platinum White, Apex Blue, Modern Steel. The interior can be either black, red, or a Type S–exclusive Orchid, and the seats are trimmed in suede with “Type S” embossed on the headrests. A 10.2-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, a 17-speaker sound system, and a flat-bottom steering wheel are all standard equipment.
The 2021 Acura TLX starts at $38,525 and can reach up to $49,325 with all-wheel drive and the Advance package, which adds luxury features and adaptive dampers. Acura hasn’t released pricing details on the Type S, only that it’ll start in the “low $50,000s.” It could reach toward $60,000 for a fully loaded Type S.
